At the Foot of Aeolis Mons

AT THE FOOT OF AEOLIS MONS: IN STEREO

Aeolis Mons is a high mountain in the Gale crater on Mars and the motif of the works. All images are taken from the land rover Curiosity that was launched on behalf of Nasa in 2011, and has been driving along a marked route since August 2012. It’s mission was to investigate Mars' ability to house life and was expected to work for at least one Mars year (about two Earth years). Curiosity is still on route and sends us new photographs daily. The now hundreds of thousands of images have become a giant archive that is publicly online on NASA's website.

This work is the result of a home-residency funded by Centrum för fotografi (Sweden) which resulted in an solo exhibition at the gallery, Tjärhovsgatan 44 in Stockholm. In the midst of the ongoing pandemic, I borrow the gaze of Curiosity's "eyes" (it’s cameras), one image for each eye, and present it as stereoscopic imagery of Mars that can be seen in 3D. The photographic images are created with my own technique; In-contact Copying, where a photograph is produced by placing silver gelatin paper in direct physical contact with a digital screen. The paper is then developed in ordinary chemical baths. You can see the pieces in 3D through the technique of anaglyphic stereo projection, moving gif animation and simply by watching the stereo pair with crosses eyes.

What is science and what is fiction? In this installation I am moving images back and forth between the analogue and the digital, to manifest our perceptive limits of distance, perspective and scale.
